It ensures that shareholders have a real say over what happens in their buildings and will help to preserve moderate- and middle-income housing for years to come,” said Assemblymember Linda B. “For far too long, many Mitchell-Lama shareholders have been treated as second-class residents in their own homes by over-empowered boards pursuing agendas that serve the interest of the few, not the majority.This vital legislation will restore the balance of power in Mitchell-Lama housing. It's been ten years since moving to Cadman Towers, I’ve used the time to become an active member of the Brooklyn Mitchell-Lama Task Force, Cooperators United for Mitchell-Lama, and a member of the Mitchell-Lama Residents Coalition and have attended hundreds of meetings of hard-working, dedicated Mitchell-Lama residents. That will bring some peace to residents of places like East Midtown Plaza, who have been dealing with this continuously for years. Then, if the initiative is turned down, a new vote can't be taken for five years, thus avoiding back-to-back stressful and rancorous campaigns. In addition, if a building wants to privatize, 80% of residents will need to approve that. A moratorium will be imposed on buildings seeking to leave the system. ![]() In addition, transparency will be increased, with boards having to hold six public meetings a year. The battle to craft the law has been ongoing for the past 20 years. I think Village View was looking to privatize also. It sounds like really good news for those of us who are on the lists of developments like East Midtown Plaza and Cadman Towers. The massive Mitchell-Lama project Co-Op City has. It's probably a case of closing the barn door after the horse has bolted, but better late than never, I suppose. Over the following two decades, more than 100,000 apartments were built, providing quality, affordable housing for working-class New Yorkers. Currently, Cadman Towers has an extremely long waiting list and therefore is not accepting new applications at this time for one, two. This is accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. ![]() The assembly and senate in Albany have passed a law to reform how Mitchell Lama co-ops are governed and also make it harder to leave the system, thus preserving affordable housing. All Cadman Towers waiting lists are posted in the Community Room at 10 Clinton Street. I don't know how I missed this, but it's potentially huge news.
